A lot of celebrities are looking at alternative colors and styles for their cars, and one of the most popular right now is a matte black finish. Matte black gives your car a really interesting feel—it’s not loud like some other colors, but that understated effect makes it cool, almost mean. It conjures images of gunmetal and stealth jets.
It’s that kind of imagery that some celebrities want to make a part of their car collections. Here is a list of five big names who’ve adopted the matte black.
Kanye West
Kanye is never afraid to show off, and sometimes to his detriment. But no one’s laughing at his new Lamborghini Aventador, which he had soaked in a matte black finish. Now the car shoots down the road with the speed and look of an ornate bullet. Don’t worry, no one’s going to get hurt, unless they get whiplash from turning their head too quickly.
Rob Dyrdek
Rob Dyrdek is no stranger to matte black, and has possibly become one of its biggest proponents. The skateboard pro once even had his friend and bodyguard, Big Black, take his Pinto in to get that matte black paint job that he refers to as “murder’d out.” He might’ve gotten an idea from the experience, because he put a matte black finish on a real classic car—his 1969 Camaro—to make a beast that came straight off the set of the Road Warrior.
Flo Rida
Flo Rida made the obvious comparison this spring when we posted a picture of his matte black Ferrari 458 next to a plane, saying he was going racing today. I wonder which won?
Ken Block
Ken Block is used to driving flashy cars for a living. But when this rally car driver needed a winter truck, Ford obliged with a matte black Ford Raptor. It’s the stealthy machine that’s perfect for winter sports and hauling boats.
Justin Bieber
The Bieb might be one of the most surprising matte black enthusiasts, and he seems to want all of his cars blacked out. He’s got a matted Range Rover and Ferrari F430, but he might have gone a little overboard when he had his Smart Car blacked out. That’s just about as threatening as a teacup poodle snarling from inside an oversized purse.
